Shinju Matsuri – Broome’s Beloved Festival of the Pearl
Shinju Matsuri – Broome’s Beloved Festival of the Pearl
There’s no better time to fall in love with Broome than during Shinju Matsuri – our annual Festival of the Pearl. This iconic celebration brings our rich cultural history to life with a vibrant mix of art, food, music and community spirit.
Now in its 50+ year history, Shinju Matsuri pays tribute to Broome’s pearling past and the diverse cultures that shaped our town – Japanese, Chinese, Malay, and Indigenous. The name Shinju means “pearl” in Japanese, and you’ll feel that golden glow of connection as soon as the festivities begin.

What to Expect
Held over two weeks in late August or early September, Shinju is the perfect time to visit (or rediscover) Broome. Locals and travellers come together to celebrate under big skies, warm sunsets, and lantern-lit evenings.
Festival favourites include:
- 🌅 Sunset Long Table Dinner – A dreamy multi-course feast served right on Cable Beach, with local chefs, live music and unbeatable views.
- 🎏 Festival Parade – Bright, joyful and full of personality, this street parade brings the whole community together.
- 🎨 Art + Culture – From pearl-shell carvings to Indigenous storytelling, you’ll find creative events all over town.
- 🎭 Family Fun – Workshops, markets, performances and pop-ups that bring joy for every age.
- 🏮 Floating Lantern Matsuri – A moving sunset ceremony where decorated lanterns are released into the water to honour loved ones.
