The Staircase to the Moon is a natural phenomenon observed in Broome Western Australia between April and October only. It is caused by the rising of a full moon reflecting on the exposed mudflats at extremely low tide creating a beautiful optical illusion of a staircase reaching up to the moon.
The Staircase Markets are held at the Town Beach Precinct on Hamersley Street for one night of the full moon April – October. Wander around the colourful local stalls under the stars, sample the tastes of Broome cuisine, listen to local live music and take in the spectacular Staircase to the Moon.
The Staircase to the Moon Night Markets in Broome illuminate the coastal town with a magical evening glow. Aligned with the natural phenomenon of the Staircase to the Moon, where the moonrise reflects off the tidal flats, these markets offer a unique and enchanting experience with live entertainment at each event. Be part of an event that practically shuts Broome down during the walk. Where most of Broome heads down to the beach for an amazing cause. But you don’t need to be in Broome to participate.
“This event all began as an idea from one of our committee members in 2012. The idea blossomed quickly into holding our first Cable Beach Walk event in 2013 with more than 10 per cent of the Broome community joining us on the beach to walk the 5km in support of the Kyle Andrews Foundation.
“What a sight it was to watch that amount of people on the sand. It was pretty astonishing” Matt – the Foundation President said.
Kyle’s Cable Beach Walk has continued to grow since those early days to now attracting more than 1,500 people getting sand between their toes in support of The Kyle Andrews Foundation.
Each year we walk from one end of the famous Cable Beach to the other. This walk has a special place in many people’s hearts, with many travelling to Broome to physically be there on the day.
You can be part of the walk from anywhere in the world. You don’t need to be in Broome to participate! For more information on how to remotely connect please email us and we can guide you through the process, please contact us.
The funds raised from the Cable Beach Walk event go towards supporting the Kyle Andrews Foundation activities.

The annual Shinju Matsuri (Japanese for “Festival of the Pearl”) originated from three cultural festivals – Japanese Obon Matsuri, Malaysian Hari Merdeka, Independence Day from British rule in 1957, and the Chinese Hang Seng. Shinju Matsuri rekindles the excitement and romance of Broome’s early days of being a world-renowned producer of South Sea Pearls when the Japanese, Chinese, Malay, Koepangers, Filipino and Europeans flocked to Broome from the late 1800’s to be a part of this prosperity. This unique multicultural population of pearl industry workers joined with the local Aboriginal people and Europeans to work on up to 400 Pearling Luggers that sailed out of Broome.
Broome’s people and businesses have given generously to show their love of Broome over the 50 year life of the Festival and is a testament to the character and culture of this special place. The volunteer Board of Shinju Matsuri is driven by the community and sees the festival as an opportunity to re-educate and inform the community of the cultural heritage of Broome. Ensuring that education and information is passed on to young people and new arrivals will assure that Broome’s unique and diverse identity is acknowledged and remembered through the generations.
Shinju Matsuri will tempt your senses with an exciting whirlwind of colour, sound, taste and smell as the community shares this beautiful locale with the world and the people who call it home.
Shinju Matsuri – Broome’s Festival of the Pearl – has been an iconic part of the regional WA events program since 1970.

The annual Shinju Matsuri (Japanese for “Festival of the Pearl”) originated from three cultural festivals – Japanese Obon Matsuri, Malaysian Hari Merdeka, Independence Day from British rule in 1957, and the Chinese Hang Seng. Shinju Matsuri rekindles the excitement and romance of Broome’s early days of being a world-renowned producer of South Sea Pearls when the Japanese, Chinese, Malay, Koepangers, Filipino and Europeans flocked to Broome from the late 1800’s to be a part of this prosperity. This unique multicultural population of pearl industry workers joined with the local Aboriginal people and Europeans to work on up to 400 Pearling Luggers that sailed out of Broome.
Broome’s people and businesses have given generously to show their love of Broome over the 50 year life of the Festival and is a testament to the character and culture of this special place. The volunteer Board of Shinju Matsuri is driven by the community and sees the festival as an opportunity to re-educate and inform the community of the cultural heritage of Broome. Ensuring that education and information is passed on to young people and new arrivals will assure that Broome’s unique and diverse identity is acknowledged and remembered through the generations.
